Fundación Cosmos Designs Wetland Parks Inspired by Birds and Insects in Chile

Fundación Cosmos, a Chilean entity, has initiated four wetland park projects throughout Chile that incorporate biomimicry and local architectural styles to promote conservation, education, and community engagement. The Siete Colores Observation Tower, located in Parque Humedal Río Maipo in the Valparaíso Region, draws inspiration from the nest of the Many-colored Rush Tyrant (Tachuris rubrigastra) and is constructed around a single foundation to reduce excavation needs. At the Maipo River Wetland Nature Sanctuary, the Rayador Observation Tower emulates the bill of the Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger), delineating the border between Marbella Beach and the protected area. In Gran Concepción, Chimalfe Park in Hualpén features a large shelter inspired by dragonfly wing patterns and a seven-meter-high observation tower. The recently designated Urban Wetland, Paicaví–Tucapel Bajo Park, includes the Traiwe observation structure, which reflects the flight phases of the white heron. All initiatives resulted from collaborative workshops with local residents and partnerships with municipal authorities. Through landscape architecture, Fundación Cosmos aims to reconnect individuals with nature while tackling the intertwined crises of climate change, biodiversity decline, and pollution.
