Fujiko Nakaya's Fog Sculpture Cloud #07156 at Bourse de Commerce

Japanese artist Fujiko Nakaya, aged 92, has installed Cloud #07156, a site-specific fog sculpture, in the rotunda of the Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection in Paris. The work, on view from June 4 to August 24, 2026, uses high-pressure pumps to produce water droplets 20–30 microns in diameter, creating a dense mist that interacts with Tadao Ando's concrete cylinder and the building's glass-and-iron dome. The title references the nearest meteorological station on Rue de Viarmes, linking the indoor cloud to Paris's weather. Nakaya, who pioneered fog sculpture at Expo '70 in Osaka, has previously installed works at the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Exploratorium in San Francisco, the Grand Palais in Paris, and Philip Johnson's Glass House. Cloud #07156 is the centerpiece of the group exhibition Clair-obscur, curated by Emma Lavigne and Anne-Marie Duguet, which also features works by Trisha Brown, Bruce Conner, Frank Bowling, and Wolfgang Tillmans. The installation responds to the museum's ventilation system, humidity, and visitor movement, making invisible air currents visible. The rotunda, originally a trading floor for commodities, now hosts a formless, ephemeral cloud that embodies the Japanese concept of ma—the meaningful space between objects.
