Fujifilm's Market Share Gain Over Nikon Misleading, Mirrorless Data Shows

Recent data from Nikkei Industry Map indicated that Fujifilm overtook Nikon as the third-largest digital camera maker, with Nikon's market share dropping from 11.7% to 8.9% and Fujifilm's rising from 9% to 11.8%. However, a closer look at production figures from Toyo Kenzai's 'Japan Company Handbook Industry Map: 2027 Edition' reveals that Nikon still holds third place in the mirrorless camera segment, which is the most relevant market for photographers. In 2025, Nikon produced 880,000 total cameras, down from 960,000 in 2024, but its mirrorless production increased by 130,000 units. Fujifilm shipped 1.16 million cameras in 2025, but only 750,000 were mirrorless, with the remainder being low-cost Instax Evo and X half models. Canon remained the leader in mirrorless production with 2.3 million units, while Sony shipped 1.8 million mirrorless cameras. Panasonic produced 270,000 mirrorless units, and OM System saw a slight decline from 130,000 to 120,000. The industry overall shows recovery, with all major companies except OM System increasing mirrorless output. The data suggests that Fujifilm's rise was driven by digital instant cameras, a segment Nikon does not compete in, and that Nikon's position in the core mirrorless market remains strong.
