Fujifilm Pours 3 Billion Yen Into Instax Film Lines at Kanagawa Plant
A second major Instax expansion in under a year is underway at Fujifilm Corporation, which will direct 3 billion yen — roughly $19 million at prevailing exchange rates — toward Instax film production at the Ashigara Site of its Kanagawa Factory. New lines there are scheduled to come online in stages starting spring 2027, reaching full operation by spring 2028, at which point Instax film output should sit about 20% above fiscal 2026 levels. The December announcement of approximately 5 billion yen for the same Ashigara location preceded this move; that earlier expansion was set to start in spring 2026. Continuous capacity building has been the pattern since 2022, when Fujifilm committed about 2 billion yen, followed by 4.5 billion yen the next year. Cumulative capacity will have grown roughly 70% over fiscal 2022 once the current round is complete. Launched in 1998, Instax has sold more than 100 million cameras and printers, a milestone Fujifilm reported last year, and the business accounted for a large share of company profits as recently as a couple of months ago. The newest hardware, the Square 2 camera, was unveiled a week before the investment news. Fujifilm frames the spending as a response to worldwide demand and says it will keep exploring photography's possibilities while widening the instant photo system that enables on-the-spot printing.
