Fu Nagasawa's First Solo Show at Gallery Vacancy Explores Folk Craft Imagery
From September 19 to October 24, 2026, Gallery Vacancy in Shanghai will host Shigan, the inaugural solo exhibition of Fu Nagasawa, an artist based in Kyoto. This exhibition showcases nine new oil paintings created specifically for this event. The term Shigan translates to "this shore," symbolizing Nagasawa's perspective that painting should focus on the present rather than merely recreating the past. His artistic journey starts at a flea market close to his studio in Kyoto, where he selects ceramics and folk items. The works incorporate elements from East Asian crafts, characterized by layers of fine strokes and a restrained color palette. Nagasawa, born in 1999 in Kochi, Japan, earned his BA from Musashino Art University in 2022 and his MFA from Kyoto University of the Arts in 2025.
