FRPO wins competition for La Scala's zero-energy production complex in Milan
The international competition for Magnifica Fabbrica, a new production facility for Teatro alla Scala in Milan's Lambrate area, has been won by Madrid's FRPO studio in collaboration with WALK Architecture & Landscape and SD Partners. Initiated by the Municipality of Milan and Fondazione Teatro alla Scala, this project will span over 66,000 square meters, accommodating the theater's workshops, rehearsal spaces, storage, and public pathways. The site, previously the Innocenti factory known for Lambretta scooters, will be transformed into a zero-energy structure featuring a 3,600 kW photovoltaic system on a translucent roof and an open-loop geothermal system for groundwater purification. The Anello will provide a public route with views into backstage activities, while the adjacent Parco della Lambretta will enhance its landscape with water features and a phytoremediation system. The historic Palazzo di Cristallo will be repurposed as a green factory to support biodiversity.
