Frisco: From DAMS Tragedy to Artistic Return

Francesco Ciancabilla, known as Frisco, is an Italian artist born in Naples in 1959. He emerged in Bologna's DAMS scene in the early 1980s, developing a unique technique combining photography, spray paint, and masking that anticipated urban art. In 1983, his name was implicated in the murder of critic Francesca Alinovi, a case known as the 'DAMS murder.' Condemned, he always maintained his innocence, left Italy, and lived in Brazil, Argentina, and Spain for many years, working as a photographer, graphic designer, teacher, and translator. He returned to painting in 2011. In a recent interview, Frisco discusses his artistic evolution, noting that the political component of his work remains intact while his technique has become more deliberate. He distinguishes his masking method from traditional stencil art, as he uses tape and automotive paper directly on canvas, creating non-reusable masks. He expresses disinterest in digital art, preferring analog photography. Regarding the artist's responsibility, he believes art should create open interpretations rather than necessarily represent reality. His experience of exile and marginality has influenced him personally, making him less superficial and more angry, but he cannot separate its impact on his art from general life experience. He identifies sharing and compassion as urgent themes, though when painting he focuses on aesthetic aspects like contrast and color relationships.
