Friedensreich Hundertwasser: Five Works That Defied Straight Lines
Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who drew inspiration from the Vienna Secession and figures such as Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, left a profound mark on post-war modernism. His diverse body of work is currently highlighted in a survey at Kunst Haus Wien. Hundertwasser's approach to painting was instinctual, merging organic shapes with structural designs, as seen in his 1961 piece Hommage au Tachisme. In 1952, he crafted Pissing Boy with Sky-Scraper without any prior sketches. He championed distinctive tapestries and transformed graphic art through various editions. His innovative printing methods were evident in his 1970–1971 work Good Morning City–Bleeding Town. Shifting to architecture in the 1950s, he completed the Hundertwasserhaus (1983–1985) and over 40 other projects, including Japan's Maishima Plant (2001), emphasizing ecological consciousness.
