Freelance Statistics 2026: 76.4M US Workers, $1.5T Economy, AI Impact

By 2026, the freelance labor force in the United States has expanded to 76.4 million, accounting for 38% of the overall workforce and generating an annual income of $1.5 trillion. This marks an increase from 57 million (36%) in 2019, largely due to the acceptance of remote work. Worldwide, 1.57 billion freelancers contribute over $3.5 trillion, with the US, India, and the UK as the leading markets. Notably, 53% of Gen Z is engaged in freelancing, and it's anticipated that over half of the US workforce will be freelancers by 2030.
