Fred Hollingsworth's Mahogany House Unveiled for First Time Since 1952

The Mahogany House, a mid-century residential design by British-Canadian architect Fred Thornton Hollingsworth, has been revealed to the public for the first time since its completion in 1952. Located at 4065 Sunset Blvd in the Canyon Heights district of North Vancouver, the four-bedroom house is part of Sunset Gardens, a neighbourhood of nearly 50 houses planned by Hollingsworth. The architect, who lived from 1917 to 2015, moved to Canada as a child and qualified as an architect in 1959 after working as an ad-hoc architectural designer around Vancouver. The house reflects Hollingsworth's early fascination with Frank Lloyd Wright, whom he met at Taliesin West. It was originally commissioned by Frank Paxton, owner of a nearby millwork business, who specified external cladding in mahogany boat plywood with matching interior veneer. The single-level, 1,990-square-foot home contains four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two separate living rooms, and was built around a mature cedar tree in the private garden. The front door is discreetly positioned out of sight from the street. The house has been in the same family since 1970 and remains almost entirely original. The current owner recalls first visiting in 1986 at age eight, remembering the wall of windows, two living rooms, and trees. The property is listed for CA $2,599,000 through WestCoastModern.ca.
