Frank Gehry's Creative Process Revealed in Serralves Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-06-02

The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, Portugal, presents 'The Century of Gehry,' a survey of the late Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry (1929–2025). Curated by António Choupina and organized with Gehry Partners and the Getty, the exhibition focuses on Gehry's design process through sketches, models, and archival materials. It opens with his radical 1977 Santa Monica home and traces his evolution through projects like the Chiat/Day building in Los Angeles (1985), the unbuilt Lewis Residence in Ohio (1989), the Guggenheim Bilbao (1997), the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles (2003), the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris (2014), and Luma Arles (2021). The show highlights collaborations with artists Claes Oldenburg, Coosje van Bruggen, Richard Serra, and Frank Stella, as well as architect Álvaro Siza, who designed the museum's new wing. Gehry's pioneering use of CATIA software for the Disney Hall is noted. The exhibition runs through December 30 at Serralves, R. Dom João de Castro 210, Porto.
