Francesca Alinovi: The Visionary Critic Who Bridged Art Worlds

Francesca Alinovi (1948–1983) was a visionary Italian art critic whose legacy has been overshadowed by her violent death. Born in Parma, she studied at the DAMS program in Bologna under Umberto Eco and Renato Barilli, graduating with a thesis on Carlo Corsi. She co-curated the International Performance Weeks at MAMbo in Bologna from 1977 to 1982, inviting artists like Marina Abramović, Ulay, John Cage, and Laurie Anderson. Alinovi was a key figure in the Italian 'Nuovi-Nuovi' movement and facilitated transatlantic exchanges, bringing Italian artists to the Holly Salomon Gallery in New York and introducing American New Wave artists like Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, and Ann Magnuson to Italy. Haring called his interview with her the most important of his life. She also engaged with design, fashion, and comics, writing for Domus and collaborating with Studio Alchimia and Alessandro Mendini. Her manifesto 'Enfatismo' was published posthumously in FlashArt in 1983. Alinovi's personal life was marked by tragedy: the death of her lover Demetrio Stratos in 1979, a failed relationship with Richard Tuttle, and a toxic relationship with student Francesco Ciancabilla. On June 12, 1983, she was found murdered in her Bologna apartment, stabbed 47 times. Ciancabilla was convicted but never confessed. A mural by Rafe Art commemorates her.
