He served as rector from 1985 to 2000, the longest tenure in the university's history, and later led the Fondazione Carisbo from 2001 to 2013. During his career, he created the interactive Museum of the Ninth Centenary in the mid-1990s and established the Genus Bononiae museum network in 2003, which revitalized historic buildings across Bologna. He also co-founded the Orchestra Mozart with Claudio Abbado in 2004 and received Italy's highest honor, the Knight Grand Cross.
