Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Opens Photography Bicentennial Show

exhibition · 2026-06-12

The Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo inaugurates 'Before it Happens' on June 13, 2026, at Palazzo Re Rebaudengo in Guarene, Italy, running through July 26. Curated by Filippo Maggia, the exhibition marks 200 years of photography with eight international artists using images, video, and installations to critically observe the present. The show maps contemporary tensions—migrations, environmental crises, economic inequality, resource conflicts, gender discrimination, and colonial legacies—through perspectives from South Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Artists include Sheelasha Rajbhandari (Nepal), whose works address patriarchal social expectations; Hit Man Gurung (Nepal) with 'The Revolutionary Dreams' on economic migration; Vinit Gupta (India) documenting 2020–2021 farmers' protests around Delhi; Uzma Mohsin (India) with 'Stick no Bills' on political representation; Ishan Tankha (India) on local communities vs. infrastructure projects; Ashfika Rahman (Bangladesh) with a poetic archive along rivers; Musuk Nolte (Peru) with 'Geographies of Water' on climate change in the Amazon and Andes; and Alia Farid with video works on culture, environment, and development. Maggia states that while Western photography celebrates its history, in the Global South images become a terrain for analysis and reclaiming postcolonial identities.
