Florim and Nerosicilia turn Mount Etna lava stone into small-format tiles

Ceramic brand Florim, in collaboration with material specialists Nerosicilia, has launched the SensiEtna collection, which recycles volcanic lava stone from Mount Etna into small-format interior tiles. Designed by architects Matteo Thun and Benedetto Fasciana of Matteo Thun & Partners, the tiles incorporate recycled monitor glass alongside native slab offcuts from Sicilian production facilities. The collection is offered in modular sizes of 10x40 cm, 10x10 cm, and 20x20 cm, produced by processing smaller pieces from larger slab offcuts to minimize waste. Three surface finishes—bugnato, crosta, and rigatino—provide tactile variety. The color palette, inspired by volcanic eruption stages, includes white, ivory, charcoal, black, yellow, and dark red. The project emphasizes a zero-waste approach and a minimal environmental footprint.
