Florencia Martinez's "I Diari del Cigno Nero" at Gilda Contemporary Art, Milan

exhibition · 2026-09-18

Curated by Cristina Gilda Artese, Florencia Martinez's solo exhibition I Diari del Cigno Nero at Gilda Contemporary Art in Milan draws its title from Nassim Nicholas Taleb's black swan theory, yet the artist focuses less on the exceptional event than on its aftermath: irreversible change, compromised identities and memories at risk of vanishing. War, hunger, migration, violated childhood and the erasure of collective identities surface without explicit imagery or spectacular devices. Martinez works with discarded fabrics, fragments and recovered materials, preserving traces of their prior existence rather than erasing their origins. The Bulldozing works evoke territories under profound transformation while retaining compositional balance and chromatic tension, and the installation built around the phrase «Mi definisca bambino» examines how language is bent to justify the unjustifiable, keeping an almost domestic scale that makes the wartime reference more jarring. The Palazzi di cristallo series pairs apparent lightness with references to displacement and forced mobility. The show marks a shift in Martinez's research, moving from an autobiographical dimension toward collective reflection without sacrificing formal autonomy. Artese's curation avoids imposing a single reading.
