Floating Convenience Store Artwork Goes Viral in Toronto Harbour

A hyperrealistic floating convenience store artwork, 'Global Convenience,' has become a viral sensation on Toronto's Harbourfront. Created by artists Trevor Wheatley and Cosmo Dean in collaboration with arts production company Puncture (led by Rashad Maharaj and Spencer Cathcart), the installation is a fully stocked but inaccessible bodega bobbing on a dock. Its glowing sign, designed in a 1970s font called Zipper, evokes familiar corner store typography. The project was commissioned by Waterfront Toronto and timed with the FIFA World Cup 2026, as soccer fans from around the world converge on the city. The artists note that convenience stores are universal community spaces, and the work draws on the immigrant family backgrounds of Cathcart and Maharaj, whose families owned such stores in Toronto. The artwork has been covered by Designboom and Elle Decor Italia, and has attracted visitors who have swum or kayaked out to it, though the doors remain locked. The piece references Elmgreen & Dragset's 'Prada Marfa' (2005), which was famously broken into. Wheatley and Dean built the structure from wood, foam, and vinyl in their Geary Avenue workshop.
