Flat Office: State Twenty Eight Designs Workspace Inspired by Mr Oizo's 'Flat Beat'

State Twenty Eight, a design studio based in Western Australia, has unveiled Flat Office, a contemporary workspace located in Subiaco, Perth. The design draws inspiration from the iconic 1990s track 'Flat Beat' by Mr Oizo, which became widely recognized through Levi's advertisements featuring a yellow puppet. Lead designer Sean Chan, along with directors Miriam Terry and Kate McGee, captured the song's glitchy, repetitive rhythm to create a sophisticated spatial design, highlighting controlled repetition and subtle variations. The interior showcases rich wood paneling, midcentury-style furniture from Gubi and Hay, and a vibrant green workspace reminiscent of a children’s play table. Cinematic influences include a surreal light field akin to the bat bunker in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy and bathrooms with orange lighting inspired by Blade Runner 2049. This project harmonizes professionalism with playful curiosity, mirroring the client's interests and character. The designers emphasize that innovation often arises from reinterpreting known elements rather than relying solely on new materials or technologies.
