Fire at Kinshasa Wedding Reception Kills at Least 22

A tragic fire broke out during a wedding celebration in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, claiming at least 22 lives, as reported by the local mayor. This incident unfolded on Friday night and extended into the early hours of Saturday in a venue situated in the northern Lingwala district. The building's cramped corridors complicated escape efforts, leading to a bottleneck as guests attempted to exit. Outside the venue, several injured attendees were seen receiving assistance. Lingwala's mayor, Norbert Mushinga, shared the preliminary death count with the Congolese Press Agency, indicating it might increase. The cause of the fire is still unknown. On Saturday morning, Jacquemin Shabani, the deputy prime minister and interior minister, visited the scene and labeled the incident a tragedy. Fires frequently occur in Kinshasa's densely populated regions, where urban development often lacks adequate fire safety measures.
