Fiona Connor's door sculpture stands out at subdued Art Basel Basel 2026

The 2026 edition of Art Basel in Basel was notably subdued, with few standout works. Critic Ben Street singled out Fiona Connor's 'Closed Down Clubs, Chango Coffee, 2022' at Maureen Paley's booth as the only piece that compelled repeated viewing. The sculpture is a meticulous one-to-one replica of a door from Chango Coffee, a community space that closed in May 2018 due to rising operating costs. Connor reproduces the door with its lock, hinge, fire safety sticker, and two notices taped to the window—one handwritten, one typed—that announced the closure. The work is part of an ongoing series replicating doors from nightclubs and community spaces forced to close by socio-economic pressures. Street describes the piece as a 'reified ghost' that makes tangible the histories of lost social venues. Art Basel Basel ran from June 18-21, 2026.
