Film Forum Retrospective Highlights Marilyn Monroe's Acting Range

Film Forum in New York is hosting a retrospective titled "Marilyn 100" from May 29 through June 11, celebrating Marilyn Monroe's centennial. Film historian Foster Hirsch, a Brooklyn College professor, selected five performances that challenge her myth as merely a sex symbol. Monroe appeared in about 30 films over 15 years before her death in 1962. Hirsch argues she was a skilled performer with impeccable comic timing and emotional intelligence, though underappreciated by critics. The retrospective includes "Niagara" (1953), where she played a dangerous femme fatale; "How to Marry a Millionaire" (1953), which established her likable persona; "The Seven Year Itch" (1955), featuring her iconic subway grate scene; "Bus Stop" (1956), a dramatic role showing her Method acting training with Lee Strasberg; and "Some Like It Hot" (1959), her best-reviewed film. Hirsch notes Monroe's voice typecast her, preventing serious dramatic roles. Her co-star Don Murray described her as difficult on set, requiring up to 40 takes. The retrospective aims to refute the notion that movie stars don't need acting skills.
