Fieldwork Facility's V&A East Storehouse Wayfinding Built as a Programmable, Low-Carbon System
The wayfinding system for the V&A East Storehouse, crafted by Fieldwork Facility, is designed to be low-carbon and easily updatable, securing a spot in the Dezeen Awards 2026 regional showcase. The custom typeface used is Spiller Mono from Commercial Type, featuring fixed character widths that facilitate interchangeable labels and panels. Directory totems display level numbers alongside pictograms, while each floor is marked with oversized numerals. One wall showcases a mixed media welcome manifesto, and another prompts visitors with "WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH THE V&A COLLECTION." The signage is constructed from low-carbon, recycled materials and is designed for disassembly. Standard8 produced the system, with hardware contributions from IDK and Solved Workshop, large print guides from Calverts Co-op, and type design by Commercial Type, under the creative direction of Robin Howie.
