Field Architecture's Three Barns Rises from the Meadows of Sun Valley, Idaho

architecture-design · 2026-10-07

Three Barns, the inaugural project in Idaho by California's Field Architecture, is a newly constructed residence nestled in the Sun Valley meadows. This design features a trio of gabled structures reminiscent of local agricultural barns, from which the name is derived. Each barn is strategically oriented to enhance views, light quality, and its relationship with the valley, collectively resembling a small mountain range that houses bedrooms and entertaining spaces, with a central kitchen and dining area, alongside an entryway leading to the main living room. Glazed breezeways facilitate a connection with the landscape, allowing residents to transition through open air and lush meadows. Instead of flattening the site, the architects embraced its natural contours, incorporating existing benches for use, preserving drainage patterns, and allowing native meadows to flourish around the buildings. The residence appears as a series of livable terraces integrated into the watershed's topography, where mountains rise in all directions, grasses sway with the wind, snow accumulates and melts seasonally, and water flows toward the Big Wood River below. Three chimneys crafted from local stone signify the home's presence. This project follows the completion of the firm's Big Sur house in 2024.
