Field Architects' Gulzar Residence in Ladakh Blends Vernacular and Modern Design

Field Architects has completed the Gulzar Residence in Ladakh, a high-altitude cold desert in the Trans-Himalayan region. The 3225 ft² house, completed in 2024, is curated by Miwa Negoro. The design team includes Abrar Dar for civil construction and Field Studios for carpentry and finishes. Photographers Suril Patel and Pia Sodhi documented the project. The architecture focuses on the co-evolution of human habitation and vernacular practices, studying local climate, food habits, culture, community structure, material economics, craftsmanship, and adaptive geometry. Ladakh's vernacular has evolved over millennia, shaped by its anthropology and trade history.
