Ferruccio Laviani's Gigi XVI Hip-Hop reinterprets Louis XVI commode with hip-hop motifs at Milan Design Week 2026

During Milan Design Week 2026, Ferruccio Laviani, alongside Fratelli Boffi, reimagined a Louis XVI commode into the Gigi XVI Hip-Hop piece. This creation fuses traditional Lombard marquetry with modern hip-hop symbols, substituting classic designs for motifs like headphones, microphones, cassettes, and tangled wires. While retaining the original form, Laviani introduces contemporary features, transforming the commode’s top into a DJ console that interweaves decorative and performance aspects. He perceives this as a remix of heritage, updating a classic with fresh inlays while keeping the focus on wood and marquetry. This partnership exemplifies a shift in modern design towards hybrid storytelling, as highlighted in the 88th edition of Glocal Design Magazine, which discusses sustainability in architecture.
