Fabrizio Plessi, Pioneer of Video Art, Dies at 84

Fabrizio Plessi, a visionary Italian artist known for merging natural elements with electronic media, has died. Born in Reggio Emilia, Plessi adopted Venice as his spiritual home, where the interplay of light and water deeply influenced his work. He is celebrated for his pioneering role in video art, creating installations that combined traditional materials like marble, earth, straw, iron, and coal with video monitors. His work often explored the theme of water, using it as a metaphor for the flow of time and existence. One of his most notable works, 'Le cariatidi dei poveri' (1996), was exhibited at the Galleria Lucio Amelio in Naples, featuring a tower of old suitcases supported by a cathode-ray television displaying X-ray images of airport luggage. Plessi's career spanned decades, with major exhibitions including a 2024 retrospective at Palazzo del Broletto in Como, which showcased his exploration of six primordial forces: water, lightning, fire, lava, gold, and smoke. His work has been documented extensively in the Italian art magazine 'Segno' since 1978. Plessi's legacy is that of a 'electronic navigator' who humanized technology, demonstrating that creative vision should always govern technological tools.
