Explosive Devices Target Power Lines Near German Coal Plant

On Tuesday, improvised explosive devices targeted power lines near a coal-fired power facility in Germany, resulting in damage to multiple electricity lines and a temporary disruption in supply, according to police and a grid operator. A police spokeswoman reported that several makeshift bombs were discovered around 8 am local time at the Preilack substation, which channels power from the nearby Jaenschwalde plant that utilizes lignite and processes waste. At least one device exploded, while others did not detonate, with no injuries or significant blackout reported in the vicinity, approximately 100 km (60 miles) southeast of Berlin. LEAG, the power plant operator, confirmed that an attack occurred at the Preilack substation and noted a “technical failure” in one of the plant's units, which is under investigation for potential links to the incident. Grid operator 50 Hertz stated that several lines in its network were damaged by unknown assailants.
