EWE Studio's Exhuma Dining Table marries green marble with cast aluminum

Mexico City-based EWE Studio has unveiled the Exhuma Dining Table, a three-meter sculptural piece combining hand-carved green marble with a cast aluminum base. The table is the latest addition to the Exhuma Collection, which reinterprets Purépecha sand-casting techniques dating to around 1450 AD. The aluminum base is formed by pouring molten metal into a hand-defined sand mold, then polished to preserve irregularities from the casting process. Measuring 308 × 135 × 77.5 cm, the table juxtaposes the solidity of stone with the fluidity of metal. The collection explores ancestral Purépecha metallurgy, where metal objects held social, economic, political, and sacred significance. EWE Studio adapts these historical methods using contemporary materials, emphasizing craftsmanship and material traces.
