Evidence by Mandel and Sultan at Zander Galerie Paris

Zander Galerie in Paris presents 'Evidence', the landmark 1977 photographic project by Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan, from May 29 to June 26, 2026. The duo met at the San Francisco Art Institute in the early 1970s and collaborated for decades. For 'Evidence', they created a fictitious company, Clatworthy Colorvues, to gain access to restricted industrial, institutional, and governmental archives. They reviewed over two million technical-documentary images, selecting 79 for the exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and 59 for the accompanying book. The black-and-white flash photographs, shot in 4x5 inch format, are presented without captions or contextual notes, challenging the notion of photography as objective evidence. The project was supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and developed between 1975 and 1977.
