Estonian Art Scene: Residencies, Exhibitions, and War Reflections

The article surveys contemporary Estonian art through residencies and exhibitions in summer 2026. At Okapii Gallery's residency on Saaremaa island, Ukrainian artists Elena Subach and Olia Koval process the war in Ukraine. Subach documents museum object protection in Lviv and water therapy for amputees, juxtaposed with WWI physical therapy illustrations. Koval's installation 'Eruption' (2024) features 40,000 handcrafted soldier bugs invading a living room. At Tallinn's Dokfoto Centre, co-curator Toomas Järvet presents 'Claus Rohland. Only a Traveller Is a Stranger' (6 May–9 Aug 2026), showing Rohland's 1970s color photographs from Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, and Syria, digitally enlarged from moisture-damaged diapositives. At Tallinn City Museum's Gallery SEEK, 'Einar Tiits. How to Be a Twig' (6 Jun–1 Aug 2026) showcases the late artist's 1990s self-portraits merging with nature, curated by Annika Haas. Vernissage Gallery in Tallinn Old Town features Jüri Mildeberg's 'Faith in Souls' (29 May–1 Jul). In London, Dulwich Picture Gallery presents 'Konrad Mägi' (24 Mar–12 Jul 2026), the first Baltic modernist painter, highlighting his expressionist landscapes.
