architecture-design · 2026-06-26

Es Devlin, the British set designer known for creating stages for Beyoncé, Adele, and Lady Gaga, has been commissioned by the Bregenz Festival to design the set for Richard Wagner's opera 'Der fliegende Holländer' (The Flying Dutchman) on the lake stage. The production is scheduled for the summers of 2028 and 2029, with a premiere on July 19, 2028. Devlin previously designed the set for 'Carmen' at the same venue in 2017 and 2018. The opera will be directed by Yuval Sharon, a highly sought-after American director. This marks the third time 'Der fliegende Holländer' has been staged on the Bregenz lake stage, following productions in 1973 and 1989/90. Before Devlin's return, the 2026 season will feature Giuseppe Verdi's 'La traviata', premiering on July 22. Devlin is celebrated for her monumental, sculptural spatial installations and has also designed for major events like the Olympics and the Super Bowl halftime show.
