Erin Milez's Dense Paintings Explore Urban Alienation in 'Everything the Light Touches'

Erin Milez's new body of work, 'Everything the Light Touches,' opens at Monya Rowe Gallery in New York from September 10 to October 24. The exhibition features dense, expressive paintings that depict crowded urban scenes—subways, streets, Times Square—where figures are physically close yet emotionally detached. Milez, who recently relocated from New York to Seattle, draws on the visual language of George Tooker and Jacob Lawrence, as well as the blocky social realist style of Works Progress Administration (WPA) murals, to examine human connection in urban spaces. Her compositions often crop figures' faces, reflecting what she describes as a subconscious design of people experiencing sensory limitations, not fully attentive to the world. Works like 'A Giving Tree' show a pair beneath blossoming branches, intimate yet reticent; 'Subway' depicts passengers absorbed in electronic devices; 'Pick Your Plot' features a woman on a crowded beach. The paintings render light in golden hues with hints of symmetry, creating a meditative intensity. Milez's move to Seattle prompted her to reflect on urban life, and the resulting works underscore a 21st-century sense of detachment. The exhibition includes works such as 'Walk Sign Is On', 'Inside Flower', 'Golden Hour', 'Up Side, Down', 'He Shoots', 'Camo', 'Stationary', and 'Hark! The Rain'.
