Erika Blumenfeld's Meteorite Research Takes Center Stage at Blaffer Art Museum

In Houston, the Blaffer Art Museum has introduced a new initiative called Artists In Research, spearheaded by Dr. Laura Augusta, the Jane Dale Owen Director and Chief Curator. The inaugural project showcases Erika Blumenfeld, a transdisciplinary artist from Houston, with her exhibition Sky Stone Cycle, which will be on display until August 7, 2026. Blumenfeld investigates meteorite impacts and the cosmic beginnings of life, highlighting how carbonaceous chondrites contributed prebiotic materials to Earth. The exhibition features research documents, videos from NASA’s All Sky Fireball Network, and her ongoing Encyclopedia of Trajectories series, initiated in 2017, which employs 23.5 karat gold in gum arabic for drawings of meteor paths. Additionally, "Lo-fi Tea w/Erika," a weekly public program, invites informal discussions with the artist every Thursday afternoon in July. Blumenfeld underscores the connection between humanity and the universe, referencing Carl Sagan's idea that "we are made of star-stuff." Furthermore, the museum has announced a comprehensive survey of her work for the 2028-2029 season.
