English Theatre of Hamburg Celebrates 50 Years with Gala and Special Events

The English Theatre of Hamburg, the first professional English-speaking stage in the DACH region, is marking its 50th anniversary. Despite being located away from the city center and tourist areas like the Reeperbahn, the theater has survived thanks to its loyal audience, international visitors, and partial support from the Hamburg Kulturbehörde. Project manager Luciano Di Gregorio highlights the intimate atmosphere of the 160-seat venue, which fosters close connections with the audience. The anniversary year will feature a gala in January with a speech by the Kultursenator, a Christmas show by Gayle Tufts, a photo exhibition of 50 years of the theater, and other surprises. A coffee table book by founders Robert Rumpf and Clifford Dean, covering all productions until 2021, is available for purchase. The theater has not yet regained pre-pandemic audience numbers and continues to rely on support.
