Emmi Whitehorse: From Hisses to Venice Biennale, Diné Artist's Global Rise

Emmi Whitehorse, an artist from Crownpoint, New Mexico, has garnered international recognition, particularly for her upcoming showcase at the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024 and her representation by White Cube. Right now, her first major museum retrospective, 'Emmi Whitehorse: Intimate Landscapes,' is being held at the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe. The exhibition features two parts: 'Light and Space (1980-2000s)' ended in June, and 'Line and Form (1990–2020s)' will conclude in October. Her abstract pieces, inspired by childhood and the Southwest's colors, are featured in notable collections such as the Brooklyn and Whitney Museums. After facing initial setbacks in the 1980s, she founded the Grey Canyon Artists with Jaune Quick-to-See Smith to challenge these issues. Whitehorse's art, represented by White Cube alongside Garth Greenan Gallery, will also have a solo show in London in 2028. She describes her work as a reminder of the beauty and uniqueness of our earth.
