Emilio Ferro's 'Threshold' Makes Paris Chapel Breathe at Nuit Blanche 2026

exhibition · 2026-06-18

On June 6, 2026, during Nuit Blanche, Italian light artist Emilio Ferro presented 'Threshold', a unique light and sound installation at the Chapelle Expiatoire in Paris. This project, commissioned by the City of Paris and produced by Studio Artera, featured a solitary beam of white light that synchronized with the chapel's doors opening and closing, creating a mesmerizing effect as if the building were inhaling and exhaling. The event attracted over 1,000 attendees over five hours. Completed in 1826, the Chapelle Expiatoire is the original burial site of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Ferro crafted an original score using magnetic field recordings from within the chapel, and the installation included a minimalist metal structure that projected light along the nave, harmonizing with the oculus. Visitors' movements subtly influenced the ambiance. Ferro has previously created installations at locations such as the Pyramids of Giza, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and St. Niklaus Chapel in Switzerland.
