Émilie Franco's Multiverse Debut "That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles" at La Pop

other · 2026-10-22

Émilie Franco's first creation, That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles, staged at La Pop, blends theatre, live music and video to probe the multiverse hypothesis and the urge to escape reality by imagining other lives. A singing voice, a screen switching on, cities layered over one another — Agrigente, Liège, perhaps New York — frame the piece's central question: what if several versions of our lives existed at once? Franco links Reality Shifting, the "quantum travel" practice popularized by teenagers on TikTok, to the exile story of her centenarian nonna Marianna Belmonte, said to have left post-war Sicily in 1954 for both Liège and New York. Built on field research, this auto-fiction follows the trail of Marianna's double across continents and leads Émilie to meet her own alter ego, Joan. Drawing on sound and video archives, the work constructs a surrealist universe in which ephemeral spaces attempt to open a breach toward a "desired reality," where intimate fictions open other possibilities. The event is a partner of Club Artistik Rezo.
