Elena Prola's Off Stage captures the quiet daytime transformation of Milan's Carroponte

Elena Prola's ongoing photographic project Off Stage, initiated in 2024, explores the Carroponte in Sesto San Giovanni on Milan's outskirts during its daytime lulls. Known for nighttime concerts and crowds, the venue empties and silences when lights dim, becoming a temporary urban pause. Prola's black-and-white images inhabit this void without filling it, featuring youths who traverse or linger anonymously, lying on the ground or leaning against structures, their presence fragile and non-performative. The work stems from Prola's personal reflection on post-industrial landscapes, acknowledging the Carroponte's layered history as a former Falck steelworks turned contemporary cultural space. Off Stage focuses not on obvious history but on the gap between past and present when spectacle ceases, revealing provisional existence and minimal gestures in a no-man's-land free from expectations. The photographs operate through subtraction, with scenographies losing their spectacular function and bodies evading identity definitions, shifting attention toward what is felt rather than seen.
