Electronic Music Pioneer DJ Dan Passes Away at Age 57

Daniel Wherrett, known professionally as DJ Dan, a foundational artist in West Coast house music and rave culture, has died at 57. His representatives announced his passing in a statement, expressing sorrow and highlighting his impact on electronic music over four decades across five continents. The cause of death was not disclosed. Wherrett was scheduled to perform at the Dead Ringer club in Nevada on March 28 but did not appear. Originally from Washington state, he relocated to Southern California and later San Francisco during the 1990s, a period when California's house music scene was expanding through festivals, collectives, and nightclubs. He collaborated with DJ Ron D Core on popular mixtapes and established the record label InStereo Recordings in Los Angeles. Additionally, he co-founded the Funky Tekno Tribe collective in San Francisco, which helped define a unique West Coast club sound blending breakbeat, dub, funk, house, and techno with psychedelic elements. DJ Dan achieved significant recognition, including high placements in DJ Mag's annual rankings, influential BBC Radio 1 Essential Mixes, and performances at major festivals such as Ultra, EDC, Creamfields, and Dance Valley. He charted three singles on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart, with "That Phone Track" reaching number one in 2004, and placed three albums on the Top Dance Albums chart. He was also a sought-after remixer for artists like Depeche Mode, New Order, Lady Gaga, and Janet Jackson. Fellow musicians, including Mark Farina and Jubilee, shared condolences, noting his kindness and influence on the rave scene. His representatives emphasized that his legacy includes his music, label, mixes, and the transformative experiences he provided for dancers worldwide.
