Eleanor Yang's Interactive Typography Installation Responds to Physical Presence

digital · 2026-03-31

Eleanor Yang has developed an interactive installation titled Synthetic Nature that transforms generative typography into a responsive system. The project features three distinct typefaces that react to human presence through webcam detection and touch sensors. These typefaces include DNA type with clustered branching forms, Mesh type with porous sponge-like textures, and Data type resembling twisted circuit board wires. The installation operates through three phases: activation triggered by proximity detection, evolution through touch interaction, and reset when the space becomes unoccupied. Yang's work explores how digital typography can behave as a living organism rather than static visual elements. The project addresses gaps in tactile technology experiences by allowing physical presence to reshape digital media. Built using multiple software platforms including p5.js, Cavalry, Spark AR, and Cinema 4D, the system creates coherent feedback loops between different programs. Yang's practice spans brand systems, motion design, and interactive design with a focus on responsive visual language. The work has been featured on It's Nice That and represents Yang's most physically engaged project to date, examining how organisms are constructed and what future life forms might resemble as technologies become more integrated with living systems.
