El Escorial Reopens Painting and Architecture Museums with Restored Masterworks

exhibition · 2026-10-01

The Museo de Pintura at El Escorial has reopened its doors, showcasing approximately one hundred artworks from Italian, Flemish, and Spanish artists, including notable figures like Titian and Tintoretto. Among the collection, twenty-one pieces are newly added, with nearly one-third having undergone restoration for this reopening. The collection's origins trace back to contributions from monarchs such as Philip II, IV, Charles II, Charles IV, and Isabella II. Ana de la Cueva highlighted Philip II's commitment to both architecture and painting. Noteworthy pieces include Coxcie's diptych Allegory of the Redemption and Rogier van der Weyden's Calvary. Visitors can enjoy free entry until 31 December 2026. The Museo de Arquitectura illustrates the monastery's architectural journey and importance. Both museums were founded in 1963 to commemorate the monastery's fourth centenary.
