Eight Unconventional Lighting Designs That Break the Rules

architecture-design · 2026-10-10

A collection of eight innovative lighting designs highlights unique explorations of shape and materials. The London-based studio City Girls crafts Frankenstein lamps from salvaged objects, with each piece given a name, such as Virginia, which features a swan-like head. Co-founders Philippe Gaud and Emma Lohner of Paris's Baguette Studio present Le Labo 1.0, a wax lampshade that can be remade indefinitely. Wretched Flowers from New York showcases a floor lamp made of stainless steel chainmail. The Gel Lamp by London designer Billy Easter includes a dimmable LED base. Mario Paroli's Bic Lamp, which is 12 times larger than a typical pen, is created in collaboration with Seletti. Audra Grays and Maxim Lester's Fused desk lamp incorporates glass and metal scraps, while Andu Masebo's A4 Lamp premiered at Unit.d. Additionally, Simon Skinner produces whimsical table lamps from second-hand materials.

Key facts

  • City Girls is a London studio of two unnamed artists who make lamps from found objects including a fibreglass model boat, old sequins and butterflies from a smashed toy.
  • Baguette Studio, co-founded by Philippe Gaud and Emma Lohner, created Le Labo 1.0 wax lampshades that can be melted and endlessly remade without material loss.
  • Wretched Flowers, by New York designers Loney Abrams and Johnny Stanish, produced a floor lamp shaped like an elongated Verner Panton 1968 Flowerpot lamp, covered in chainmail and hand-beaded glass and gemstones.
  • Billy Easter released the Gel Lamp through her studio Public Parts; it is a hollow silicone cube measuring approximately 11.5-by-11.5-by-11.5 centimetres with a dimmable LED base and slots for coloured gels.
  • Bic Lamp by Mario Paroli and Seletti is a pendant shaped like the Bic Cristal ballpoint, 12 times the size of the standard pen, with black, blue and red lid iterations.
  • Audra Grays and Maxim Lester created Fused, a desk lamp made from offcuts of Grays' glassmaking and Lester's metalwork, fused to cut making costs.
  • Andu Masebo's A4 Lamp is made from three pieces of galvanised sheet steel that fit inside an A4 envelope and debuted earlier this year at Unit.d in Haggerston.
  • Simon Skinner created 20 kitschy table lamps by stacking second-hand bowls, ashtrays and tiny cat figurines from charity shops and flea markets, each sandblasted to look like objects suspended in ice.
