Eichler X-100, the ‘house of the future’, is seeking a new buyer

architecture-design · 2026-10-13

On the market is the Eichler X-100, a prototype home constructed in 1956 in San Mateo Highlands, California. This steel-framed house was created by architects A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons for developer Joseph Eichler as a testing ground for innovative design ideas, materials, and building methods. Within months, it drew over 150,000 visitors and received significant media attention. Spanning 2310 square feet, the residence comprises three bedrooms, two living areas, an open kitchen, two central bathrooms, and two interior gardens, with glass sliding doors that offer views of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Initially priced at $47,000 in 1957, it has had three subsequent owners. In 2016, it earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places, the only Eichler home to do so, and was restored in 2017 through the X-100 Renewal Project. Currently, owner Marty Arbunich, who leads the Eichler Network, occasionally hosts educational tours. The property is listed for sale at 1586 Lexington Avenue, San Mateo, CA 94402, through Boyenga Real Estate.
