Eggshells Transformed into Award-Winning Lighting Design

Australian designer Joanne Odisho has created an award-winning lighting design from discarded eggshells. Developed during her studies at RMIT University in Melbourne, the project repurposes eggshells collected from local cafés. The shells are sterilized, crushed into a fine powder, and combined with a biodegradable biopolymer to form a durable composite material with a stone-like texture. The resulting blocks retain natural tones and can be stacked into various configurations. Beyond lighting, the modular composite suggests applications in sustainable furniture and interior design, such as room dividers and shelving, offering a circular alternative to resource-intensive materials.
