Egeon's Rizomorfe Infest an Abandoned Chapel in South Tyrol

In the vineyards of Vadena, South Tyrol, artist Egeon (born 1990 in Bolzano) has transformed a deconsecrated chapel dedicated to Maria Ausiliatrice into a site for a new painting intervention. The work, part of his ongoing Rizomorfe cycle, was created in 2026 and is documented in photographs by Rosario Multari. The chapel, originally built in the 17th century and reconstructed in the 1950s, now contains a black nucleus in the apse from which hundreds of lines spread across walls, vaults, and moldings. Egeon's practice, initiated in 2022, has involved over thirty actions across Italy, Slovenia, the United States, and the Faroe Islands. The title references fungal filaments that allow certain species to expand underground and colonize new habitats, evoking both connection and deterioration. The intervention intensifies the building's precarious state rather than restoring it, with lines that blend with cracks and worn plaster. The work is site-specific and performative, destined to disappear or transform with its support. The chapel is open to visitors from September 7 to 11 by appointment via email. A solo exhibition of the Rizomorfe cycle is scheduled at SAC (Spazio Arte Contemporanea) in Robecchetto con Induno (Milan) from October 24 to December 19, 2026. Egeon's intervention deliberately contrasts with contemporary public art trends that aim to reassure or enhance places, instead revealing the fragility of matter and the potential of ruins as spaces for thought.
