Edoardo Aruta's 'From the Weight of the Earth to the Breath of Clouds' at Andrea Nuovo Home Gallery

exhibition · 2026-05-29

Andrea Nuovo Home Gallery in Rome presents 'Dal peso della terra al respiro delle nuvole' (From the Weight of the Earth to the Breath of Clouds), a solo exhibition by Italian artist Edoardo Aruta featuring over twenty works, some new and others from recent years. The show is structured as a Dantean journey descending into themes of greed and power, passing through a contemporary purgatory of resistance and disillusionment, and ascending toward a space of clouds symbolizing freedom. Materials evolve from dense bitumen and graphite to bronze and brass, and finally to light paper and cellulose. The title references George Orwell's 'Animal Farm', with the words 'good' and 'bad' crossed out, turning the slogan into an open question. Works include 'Ècdisi' (2026) and 'Attenti al cane' (2026), which critique colonialism and power through fake crocodile skin with gold surfaces; 'A spada tratta' (2026), a corroded sword; and 'Paesaggi sociali' or 'Babele' series, graphite drawings of protest slogans photographed by the artist, each titled with location and date. 'Quando gli asini voleranno' (2026) and 'When pigs fly' (2026) are brass sculptures of donkeys and pigs, with shadows projected by a beacon. The final series, 'tra cielo e terra' (2024), proposes new Italian stamps featuring cloud photographs instead of national icons, challenging state representation. The exhibition is curated by Fernarda García Marino.
