Earthbox: Equipo de Arquitectura’s Sensorial Studio in Asunción
Earthbox, designed by Equipo de Arquitectura as their own studio in Asunción, Paraguay, transforms a limited budget into an exploration of rammed earth, reused wood, glass, and light. The project integrates two existing trees—a flamboyán outside and a guavirá at the center—and builds an atmosphere tied to matter and the senses. Rammed earth walls, 30 cm thick, support the roof, with the slab resting on 20 cm of wall, clearly expressing the material’s structural behavior. Doors and furniture were made from wood previously used as formwork for the concrete slab, extending the material’s life and linking interior elements to the construction’s memory. The library is separated from the walls to allow light to continue its path; books, paintings, and objects appear suspended as shadows shift throughout the day. The experience engages all senses: jazz sound, incense aroma, and fresh coffee taste complete an atmosphere where light, gravity, and matter define space. Earthbox was photographed by Leonardo Méndez and Federico Cairoli. The project is featured in Glocal Design Magazine’s 89th edition, “Visionarias del espacio,” which gathers 15 female architects and interior designers expanding the conversation on architecture, design, and interiorism in Mexico, with collector covers by Prince Láuder and Jimena Estíbaliz.
