Ealing Return: Brown Urbanism and Kitchen Bee Transform West London Period Home with Light-Filled Extension

architecture-design · 2026-10-03

Brown Urbanism, a Wallpaper* Architects Directory 2024 alumnus, and Kitchen Bee Design Ltd have completed Ealing Return, a residential extension and full ground-floor refurbishment in West Ealing, London. The project replaced an unfit lean-to rear extension that had restricted the kitchen to a galley layout with poor light. The client, a family of three, initially appointed Kitchen Bee to improve the kitchen; the firm then invited Brown Urbanism to collaborate on a new extension. The design brief called for more light and openness, better front-to-back flow, utility space for a washer and dryer, a larger kitchen, a guest WC, built-in seating and dining, and ample storage without feeling cramped. Architect Brown, whose portfolio includes the award-winning Triangle House, led the design, considering seven to eight iterative options. The chosen scheme uses two mirrored arched openings to divide the lounge from the kitchen and dining area, preserving volume and enclosure while allowing light and views through the home. Kitchen Bee’s Mioko Fujisaki and Lucy integrated utility functions into tall kitchen units. The pitched side infill features exposed painted rafters beneath roof lights, creating a rhythmic ceiling and dappled sunlight. Kitchen manufacturer Armony Cucine executed the build. The project demonstrates how a boutique footprint and modest budget can yield a contemporary, functional family home.
