EA FC 27 Gets PEGI 16 Rating Over Loot Box Rules

EA FC 27, featuring Kylian Mbappé as cover star, has received a PEGI 16 age rating due to new rules targeting loot boxes. The Pan-European Game Information body (PEGI) now classifies games with paid random items as 16+ by default, affecting EA FC's Ultimate Team (FUT) mode. Previously rated 3+, the change follows PEGI's overhaul of its system used in 38 countries including the UK. Critics compare FUT to gambling, but Electronic Arts (EA) argues spending is optional. The UK government declined to regulate loot boxes under the Gambling Act 2005, citing no evidence of harm. FUT generates a substantial portion of EA's $5.5bn annual add-on revenue. The new rating restricts under-16s from buying the game in shops, though most purchases are digital with parental controls. EA FC 27 introduces "The Grounds" open-world area, returning character Alex Hunter, and a £139.99 Ultimate Plus Edition. EA is being acquired for $55bn by Saudi-led investors.
