Dum-Dum Lab builds red timber pavilion as wetland classroom in Chile
Dum-Dum Laboratorio de Arquitectura Avanzada has completed the Troya Pavilion (Mirador Interpretativo Laguna Troya), a 38-square-metre red-painted timber structure on the shores of Laguna Troya in Calbuco, Chile. The pavilion functions as an environmental classroom and lookout for observing the wetland ecosystem. Completed earlier this year, it continues the studio's research into computational design and discrete fabrication, using small timber elements assembled without heavy machinery. The diamond-patterned lattice creates a porous, stereometric form that mediates the landscape while minimizing site impact. A boardwalk steps down to three platform bleachers facing the water. The design balances structural stability with permeability, emphasizing visible connections. Collaborating with local environmental education and ecotourism organizations, the pavilion incorporates scientific illustrations of native flora and fauna by illustrator Sol Pacheco. The project was supported by Creación Artística Fondart 2025, with a design team including Francisco Calvo, Katherine Cáceres, and Juan Luis Marín.
